Refer to pages 5-6 to 5-16
Where applicable in solving these problems, let (pi) π = 3.14159. Round to nearest 100th.

                     Squares and Rectangles
                     1. Calculate the square footage with a length of 8 feet 6 inches and a width of 5 feet 6 inches.
REMEMBER to convert to decimal fractions.

                                                                                ________________________

                     2. A rectangular field is 35 rods wide and 50 rods long. How many acres are in this field?
(Refer to Table 5.1 for assistance.)

                                                                                ________________________

                     3. Find the number of acres in a rectangular ranch that is 3.5 miles wide and 4 miles long.
(Refer to Table 5.1 for assistance.)

                                                                                ________________________

                     Triangles
                     4. What is the area in square feet of a triangular sail that has a base of 18 feet and a height
                           of 22 feet?

                                                                                ________________________

                     5. A roofing truss is composed of two triangles which have two runs (c) of different lengths.
The peak of the roof contains the same height (a), but the base (b) of the truss are of
                           different lengths. In the diagram you have two triangles for a truss with sides a 1, a 2 , b 1 ,
and b 2 with measurements. The truss slopes, c 1 and c 2 , are yet to be determined.
Calculate the lengths of c 1 and c 2 and with pencil and paper by using the equation for 5
                                   2
                                       2
                                           2
triangles a + b = c as in Example C, Triangles, on page 5-13. Show your work and you
may use your calculator for some of the arithmetic but refrain from using the square root
button. Again Show Your Work with pencil and paper for the calculations. Round to
the nearest 10th. No credit if work is not shown.

                                                                                ________________________

                                          c 1 = ? feet a 1 c 2 = ? feet
                                                                   a 2

                                              b 1 = 35 feet b 2 = 55 feet

                     6. How many square feet are in a circular area that has a radius of 20 feet? Round to the
                           hundredth.

                                                                               ________________________

                     7. The diameter of an engine piston is 3.5 inches. To the nearest thousandth, what is the
