Example B Kyle Thomson is feeding 60 steers with a beginning weight of 30,000 pounds. He feeds them
until the total weight is 66,000 pounds. His holding period is 160 days. It takes on average 7
pounds of feed for every pound of gain. The feed costs $264.55 per ton. (a) What will be the
estimated total pounds fed? (b) How many tons will be fed? (c) What is the total cost of the
feed? (d) What is the average feed cost per head? (e) What is the average daily cost per head?
Solution algorithm
(a) Total Pounds fed = Total Gain x feed conversion rate #
= 66,000 # – 30,000 # x 7 #
= 36,000 # x 7 #
Total Pounds fed = 252,000 #
(b) Tons fed = Total Pounds fed ÷ 2,000 # / ton
= 252,000 # ÷ 2,000 # / ton
Tons fed = 126 tons
(c) Total Cost of feed = Tons fed x Cost per ton
= 126 tons x $264.55 / ton
Total Cost of feed = $33,333.30
(d) Avg feed cost / hd = Total Cost of feed ÷ Number of head fed
= $33,333.30 ÷ 60
Avg feed cost / hd = $555.56
(e) Avg daily feed cost / hd = Avg feed cost / hd ÷ Number of feeding days (holding period)
= $555.56 ÷ 160 days
Avg daily feed cost / hd = $3.47
