                     Objectives

Mastering the material in this chapter and you will be able to:

 Understand the meaning of addend, sum, total, subtrahend, minuend,
remainder, multiplier, multiplicand, factors, product, dividend, divisor,
                            quotient, average, and arithmetic mean.
 Read, write, and round whole numbers.
 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers.
 Check the accuracy of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
                         Calculate arithmetic averages.
 Complete arithmetic of signed numbers.

A Review of Arithmetic Principles and Applications in
                     Preparing a Basic Foundation

Mathematical principles as applied are exactly the same for you the individual as they are
for the John Deere company, Smith and Wesson, or Safeway stores. The difference between
you and these companies are the size of your check books. The arithmetic algorithms for you
and these companies are the same; it is just that the numerical sizes are different.
Mathematics and arithmetic play an important role in planning, controlling and reporting
outcomes for all. Mathematics provides useful tools and is a system of thinking and looking
at problems, as has been discussed in the introductory remarks. The employee and owner
who is able to understand symbols, formulas, the algorithms, and is able to interpret
significant reports, graphs, and statistics, thinking in mathematical terms and possessing
the ability to explain the reports and how they are derived has a distinct advantage over
those less capable. Arithmetic skills are a very important part of your education and
                     preparation for success.
Much of the material for this first chapter you were exposed to in the elementary grades
and will be a reminder of those classes.
