Writing a Résumé
As a job seeker, your résumé is a concise picture of you and must
be well-thought-out. It must communicate accurately, clearly, and
quickly your objective; your accomplishments; your experience and
qualifications. The résumé is usually your first impression to a
reviewer and, therefore is a very important personal sales brochure. It
should be no more than two pages in length and preferably one page.
YOUR SALES BROCHURE
Your resume is an extremely important document. It is advertising;
it is a warranty; it is a personal sales brochure. Remember:
You are what the résumé sells.
Résumés are designed to allow many people to get to know you
quickly and easily during the course of your job search.
Your resume must be high quality--in both content and in
appearance. Be sure it looks good!
Nobody likes to feel that, in effect, they are being reduced to a
mere scrap of paper, but you have little choice if you want a job.
As in sales brochures, highlight the key benefits of the product
(you).
Résumé s are used at every level of the organizational world.
There are times when you will need more than one resume. A
résumé can be used to target different kinds of employers and as such
should be crafted to allow you the flexibility of reaching more than one
kind of employer. Develop résumé's to stress tasks and achievements
that are of special interest to each particular employer. Such a resume
could give you a competitive edge by demonstrating that you are the
right candidate for the specific job. On the other hand, don't spend your
valuable time rewriting resumes when you actually should be involved
in your job search. Most of the time you can use a résumé cover letter to
clarify how well suited you are to a particular field.
