                      Converting pounds of milk to liters of milk:
                         Raw milk doesn't weigh the same as water because of the solids content of milk, so you can't do
                      a straight conversion of mass to volume:
                               Milk weighs 8.6 lb/gallon (U.S. gallon)
                               There are 3.79 liters/U.S. gallon
                               Therefore:    8.6 lb/ 3.79 liters = 2.26 lb/liter of milk
                               Therefore:  100 lb/2.26 lb = 44.25 liters/cwt milk

                     Example: A mature Ayrshire cow will produce 18,000 pounds of milk annually. Presume the
                                cow’s peak production is at 89% of production. What would be the anticipated liters of
                                milk production for her second calving?

                     Solution
                         Step 1: calculate pounds of annual production
                             Milk production = Pounds annual milk production mature cow x peak % production
                             Milk  production  =             18,000                x       89  %
                                            =                18,000                x        0.89
                             Milk production = 16,020 pounds Total pounds produced

                         Step 2: convert pounds of milk to gallons
                             Cwt  =  total pounds produced  ÷  8.6 lbs/gallon
                                  =       16,020 #       ÷    8.6 #/ga
                             Cwt  =    1,862.79  gallons

                          Step 3: calculate liters of milk from the gallons of milk.
                             liters = gallons produced x metric factor
                                  =     1,862.79  gallons   x  3.79 liters / ga
                             liters = 7,059.97 liters of milk
