Computerized Job Hunting
Resources
The computer age is on us and there exists a wealth of
information that is easily accessible via the personal computer. To
use a computerized service for your job search, you can subscribe
directly to an on-line service or visit your local library. There are
many public and university libraries that provide walk-in uses of
online services; some will conduct the search for you at a nominal
cost. Some fee-based services offer same-day turnaround for
customized searches. An invaluable resource guide called The
Directory of Fee-Based Information Services lists more than four
hundred U.S. and Canadian library systems that provide fee-based
search services. The price of the directory is $29.00, or go to your
local library and request a copy for review. For more information on
the directory, call FYI Service at (800) 582-1093.
The Computerized Job Hunting Resource is divided into two
parts: the "Computerized Database Public Access Directory," and
the "Computerized Fee Database Directory."
In the first directory, you will find information on universities
or public libraries that offer complete research and document
retrieval services. You will find that these are regional listings, and
a few major metropolitan areas. You can also find out the facility
closest to you by calling your public library (or one of the full
service libraries listed here) and ask for information on the nearest
library offering "on-line services and a public-access computer
center."
In the second directory, "Computerized Fee Database Directory,"
which lists on-line databases in most major U.S. cities. Some are
quite specialized; others offer services of interest to most job
hunters. These services charge subscription dues, password fees,
access charges, or a combination. Phone charges are extra.
