JOB APPLICATIONS
Many companies require job seekers to file applications for
employment on their corporate form. This form is constructed to
protect the company from false information given by an applicant,
and contains conditions and contingencies (caveats) of
employment. Some companies use an “Application Information
Form” which is a precursor to the actual “Application for
Employment.” On each of these forms, the applicant is required to
certify with their signature ... “that the information given is true in
all respects. I understand that any misrepresentation or omission of
facts may result in refusal to hire, and if employed, as a cause for
immediate termination by dismissal.”
Companies do background searches on your character, your credit
worthiness and trustworthiness. Under the “Fair Credit Reporting
Act,” a business may prepare an investigative consumer report on
the applicant’s character, general reputation, personal
characteristics, and mode of living with the applicant’s permission.
The company, as a part of filing an application with them, obtains
this permission. If your permission is withheld, the company will
not even consider you for employment.
An Application of Employment or Applicant Information Form is
not an offer to hire nor does it obligate a company to hire you.
Applications are a preliminary step to employment. An offer to
employ, when made, is for employment at will and cannot be
construed as a guarantee of continued employment. A company
reserves the right to terminate the employment of any employee at
any time. Any employee also has the right to terminate their
employment with the company at any time.
On the following pages is a typical Application for Employment.
Review this sample application, practice filling it out, and take your
practice information with you when you go to any company to fill
out their forms.
