Example D: 45 gross to dozens

                             Solution: (45 gross x 144 doz/gross) = 6480 doz

Example E: 6 bushels, 3 pecks, and 4 quarts to pints

Solution: quarts (qt) + pecks (pk) + bushels (bu) = pints (pt)

                                              4 qt + 3 pk + 6 bu =
                                            x 2 pt/qt + x 8 qt/pk + x 4 pk/bu =
                                              8 pt + 24 qt + 24 pk =
                                                             x 2 pt/qt + x 8 qt/pk =
                                                             48 pt + 192 qt =
                                                                       + x 2 pt/qt =
                                              8 pt + 48 pt + 384 pt = 440 pts

                             Arithmetic Operations With Measurements

denominate The arithmetic principals of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division
number : a number apply equally to the denominate numbers as these do to concrete numbers. Units are
associated with a unit maintained, and translated to the next larger denominate value, such as 18 inches (a
of measurement. 5 is denominate number) is equivalent to 1 foot and 6 inches (two denominate numbers).
            a concrete number,
attaching a The arithmetic is similar, with conversions occurring as required. The smallest unit of
differentiation such as measure being placed to the right, with the successively larger units of measure being
inches causes “5 arranged in order to the left.
            inches” to be a
denominate number. Example A: Add 4 yards 2 feet 7 inches and 8 yards 2 feet 10 inches.
            Denominate: to
name the Solution: 4 yd 2 ft 9 in
measurement as in + 8 yd 2 ft 10 in
dollars and or franc’s, 12 yd 4 ft 19 in
            feet and inches, or
            hours, minutes and + 1 ft -12 in (a)
            seconds. 12 yd 5 ft 7 in
                                          + 1 yd -3 ft (b)
                                          = 13 yd 2 ft 7 in

Explanation: (a) there are 12 inches in each foot, therefore 12 inches is
subtracted from 19 inches and that 1 foot is added to the 4ft
leaving a remainder of 7 inches. (b) Since 3 feet equal 1 yard you
subtract 3 feet from the 5 feet leaving 2 feet, and add 1 yard to the
12 yards to increase the yardage to 13 yards. Completing the
arithmetic yields a sum of 13 yd 2ft 7 in.

In Example B requiring multiplication of denominate numbers, the multipliers are
                             whole numbers.

Example B: In hours and minutes, what is the total time worked by a man who works
5 full days and 1 half day when a full day is 7 hours and 30 minutes and
a half day worked is 4 hours and 15 minutes?

                                                  5 days 1/2 day
                             Solution: 7hrs 30 min 4hrs 15 min
                                                                x 5 x 1
                                             35 hrs 150 min + 4hrs 15 min
                                         + 2 hrs - 120 min
                                             37 hrs 30 min 150 minutes = 2 hrs 30 minutes
                                         + 4 hrs 15 min
                                             41 hrs 45 min
