Laying Cages
Figure 12.6 illustrates a design for a commercial hen house. The overall width is 40 feet which
includes the feed conveyance, and stacked cages for levels. The total number of birds in each house
depends on the number of birds to be caged, calculated with the cage width and length as outlined in
Table 12.7. Note that this type of system is automated for feed delivery, water delivery and egg
collection. Eggs are collected on a conveyor belt that is moved to a collection house at the end of the
building. Manure is collected under the cages into the Trough pit that is scraped out using an
automatic scraping to a manure pit outside the building. There should be a minimum of 10 feet at the
end of each cage row to allow for equipment access.
