                     Example C: The Castle Company farms 1,000 hectares. Their land is 45% in soybeans, 30% in
                                  corn and 25% pecans. How many acres of each crop are being farmed? Refer to
                                  Table 15.1.
                     Solution: acres = hectares ÷ metric factor x crop %
                     Soybeans acres  =   1,000 ha  ÷    0.4    x   45%
                                     =    1,000   ÷     0.4    x   0.45
                                     =          2,500          x   0.45
                               acres  =  1,125 acres
                     Corn      acres  =  1,000 ha  ÷  metric  factor  x  30%
                                     =    1,000   ÷     0.4    x   0.30
                                     =          2,500          x   0.30
                               acres  =   750 acres
                     Pecans    acres  =  1,000 ha  ÷  metric  factor  x  25%
                                     =    1,000   ÷     0.4    x   0.25
                                     =          2,500          x   0.25
                               acres  =   625 acres

                     Example D: Darrell Vincent Farms has a total of 2,725 acres in nut production for walnuts and
                                  almonds. 82 percent of the farm land is dedicated to walnuts. How many hectares
                                  produce walnuts for Darrel Vincent Farms? Refer to Table 15.1.
                     Solution: hectares = (acres x metric factor) x crop %
                     Walnuts    hectares  =  (2,725 ac  x    0.4ha/ac)  x    82%
                                         =   (2,725  ac  x   0.4ha/ac)  x    0.82
                                         =           1,090             x     0.82
                                hectares  =   893.8 ha

                     Example E: Trees are spaced 15’ by 15’. (a) How many trees can be planted per hectare knowing
                                  that 1 acre equals 43,560 square feet and 1 hectare is 10,000 square meters; and the
                                  relationship of acres to meters is 0.4 (refer to Table 15.1)? (b) How many trees will
                                  be purchased to populate 30 acres? (c) Each tree will cost $7.98 from the nursery
                                  FOB the farm. What will be the investment in trees? Refer to Table 10.7 and Refer to
                                  Table 15.1.
                     Solution:
                          (a)     Square feet / acre
                               ——————–———— ÷ metric factor = No. of trees per ha
                              Row spacing x Tree spacing

                                     43,560  sqft
                                    —————             ÷   0.4 ha/ac   =  No. of trees per ha

                                     43,560  sqft
                                    —————             ÷   0.4 ha/ac   =  No. of trees per ha
                                      225 sqft

                                    193.6 trees/ac    ÷   0.4 ha/ac  =  484 trees per ha

                          (b) No. of trees / acre x (total acres x metric factor) = Total trees planted
                                   484 Trees / ha     x (30 acres  x  0.4 ha/ac)  =
                                   484 Trees / ha     x         (12 ha)           =

                          (c) Total trees Planted x Cost / Tree FOB = Total tree investment
                                 5808  Trees     x  $7.98 / Tree FOB  =
                                                       $46,347.84   =  Total tree investment
