Changing a Fraction to an Equivalent Decimal Fraction. Recall that a fraction is
made up of a numerator and denominator and a line between identifies the arithmetic
function of division,
numerator
denominator
and can be written as numerator ÷ denominator.
Thus the fraction 3/4 may be interpreted to mean division and may be rewritten as 3 ÷ 4.
Even though it is not shown, the decimal point is understood to fall just to the right of a
whole number. When performing the arithmetic indicated the resulting answer is (3 ÷ 4 =)
0.75.
With pencil and paper you would write:
