                                                    (500 – 65)
                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =  [ ————     x  205]  +  65       +  60

                                                      435
                           .                   =  [  ——–        x  205]  +  65       +  60
                                                      169

                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =  [  2.574      x  205]  +  65    +  60
                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =     527.66  +   65   +  60
                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =  652.66     653 pounds      (Rounded up)

                           Heifer calf or Bull calf adjustment: Calf is a heifer. Add 25 pounds
                           653 pounds + 25 pounds = 678         Final adjusted weight for calf’s sex            11

                    Example B. A bull calf born on March 28 from a four-year-old cow and weaned on October 15 weighed
                                475 pounds. His dam was a four-year-old cow. The calf’s birth weight is not available,
                                therefore it is presumed for this bull calf’s birth weight is 70 pounds. Calculate of the calf’s
                                adjusted weight?

                    Solution:

                           Bull Calf:
                                                 weaning wt. − birth wt. Dams Age
                           Adjusted 205-day wt. =  [ ——————–————  x 205]       +  birth wt.   +    Weaning wt
                                                     age in days                              Adjustment

                                                   475 - 70
                           Adjusted 205-day wt. =  [ ————     x   205]    +  70  +  20
                                                    164*
                           *Age in days = Oct. 15 (288th day of yr. from Table 11.4 above) to March 28 (87nd day of yr.)
                                  365 — 288 +  87  = 164 days

                                                    (475 – 70)
                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =  [ ————     x  205] +  70  +  20
                                                      164

                                                      405
                           .                   =  [   ——        x  205] +  70   +  20
                                                      164

                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =  [  2.4695      x  205] +  70  +  20
                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =     506.25  +   70   +  20
                           Adjusted 205-day wt.   =  596.25     596 pounds      (Rounding)

                           Heifer calf or Bull calf adjustment: Calf is a bull. Subtract 25 pounds
                           596 pounds − 25 pounds = 571 pounds          Final adjusted weight for calf’s sex

                       How many bulls are needed for the herd? It is recommended that there be 1 bull for every 25 to 30 cows
                    on the range for proper coverage. The breeding period is 60 to 70 days and the bulls are generally older than 2
                    years of age.

                    Example: Cattle Rancher Danny Juarez has a 300 cow herd, and his good management requires a ratio of 1
                               bull for every 30 cows for breeding. If the ratio of 1:30 is used for bulls to cows in breeding then
                               how many breeding bulls are required to service a 300 cow herd?

                    Solution:   # cows in herd ÷ cows/bull =  # of breeding bulls

                               300 cows ÷ 30 cows/bull  =  # of breeding bulls

                               10  =  # of breeding bulls
